DSDN 112 - Assignment 3 Final Video.

This is my final video for this assignment.

Video Assignment

For my video I detoured from the idea of using a mario costume as I found that the price was not within my reach. I have decided to go for a more abstract approach and though of expanding my application by having a 'Wider Wellington' setting where first year students can become aquatinted with Wellingtons attractions best suited to younger audiences. In my film I will show frames taken from various spots in Wellington that a student would become familiar with such as the water front and Cuba Street. I have chosen to do this as my target audience for my application is first year students so I would like to focus more on themes of freedom and fun things that young generations are drawn to.

To still incorporate Mario into my video I have placed stencils of My SupervicBro characters throughout the frames in my video to incorporate a sense that he is with you every step of the way should you need him.

Although I was very interested in using the song Midnight Life a remix by M83 there were issues with copyrighted material so I opted to using a basic alternative instrumental.

I have used iMovie to create my video and placed a filter called hard colour over my filming to enhance colour and reconnect it with the brightness that is used in my application.

These are photos of the costume that I was initially going to use and also of some of the shots in my video.

Interaction Video

For my Super Vic Bros video I am wanting to create mario into a real life character going through the same experiences as a first year student would to make the user feel more comfortable. I am going to use this film mainly as a promotion for my App.

I am going to have someone dressed in a full mario costume that will walk around familiar wellington spots such as oriental parade and cuba street interacting with the public as he/she travels. I would like to present the video as more of a fly on the wall/day in the life approach and am particularly interested in grey scaling.

I am very interested in using the track Midnight Life for my backing audio as i feel it interacts well with a younger audience without being overly invasive

This is the costume that I have sourced for the film. Although I would have preferred to have a full bobble head costume in regards to time I will have to resort to this.
I pick up the costume tomorrow and will begin filming! I will post pictures of my initial film frames

Design Brief

INTRODUCTION TO INTERACTION DESIGN- PROJECT TWO

For my application assignment I decided to associate with a simple artist model – Super Mario brothers. In the world of retro gaming Mario is considered a classic so I wanted to capture a simplistic yet effect style adapting the crucial elements that make Mario what it is.

I adapted the use of Victoria University into the name Super Vic Bros to suggest an game like experience. Pixelated imagery has been used along with the character Mario himself to create an interactive experience for users. My application is directed towards first year Victoria University students who may need extra assistance with finding their bearings from class to class. To avoid confusion I have covered the most essential areas that a first year student would need to find such as the library.

I have designed the application as an effective method for students to either test their navigation skills or receive help with directions by having a series of options. ‘Show me’ allows students to be shown the most direct path to ones class, while ‘test me’ challenges students to find their own routs to gain points that can then be redeemed at the canteen as coffee vouchers.

Welcome to Hunter

As Mario is commonly known for its retro use of sound I am planning to use the original Mario theme song to accompany my application. I feel it will add to the authenticity of the application. Further in my design I have developed my closing page complete with a back button allowing users to return to the original home page.

For my App I am largely using the use of flash buttons and also motion tweens to move my Mario character. As higher levels are unlocked that is when the second Mario brother will come into use within the App. Points can be earned through the 'Test me' option found on the menu bar. The more points that are awarded the closer the user comes to gaining points the they can redeem for coffee vouchers at the canteen or drink vouchers at the hunter lounge.

Prototypes/General Design

These are examples of prototypes for my opening tool bars and also my first stage of the application game. The idea is that Mario will be guided to one end of the maze to another.

The type face I am going to use for my Application is called Covert Ops font as I feel that it incorporates well with the development of the Mario theme. It was sources from DaFont.com

I Will be using a standard Nintendo style controller for movement of the characters.  This is a genral design of the one that I will be using. It will be placed at the bottom right hand of the screen and will allow the user to move Mario around the maze

Super Vic Bros

I have decided to base my App on the well known retro game Super Mario Bros however I will specify the application to Victoria University. I am wishing to create an interactive game style application best suited to the teenage generation. My App is ultimately designed for first year students who are unfamiliar with the Vic uni campus and will act as a digital support for students to require assistance when trying to find there bearings. The app will consist of three options the first being the 'Show Me' setting where students are guided to a direct route to their classes. The second is a 'Test me' setting for students who wish to continually familiarise themselves with the campus. It will create challenges along the way and you will win extra point for discovering short cuts from class to class.
