DSDN 112 - Assignment 3 Final Video.

This is my final video for this assignment.

Video Assignment

For my video I detoured from the idea of using a mario costume as I found that the price was not within my reach. I have decided to go for a more abstract approach and though of expanding my application by having a 'Wider Wellington' setting where first year students can become aquatinted with Wellingtons attractions best suited to younger audiences. In my film I will show frames taken from various spots in Wellington that a student would become familiar with such as the water front and Cuba Street. I have chosen to do this as my target audience for my application is first year students so I would like to focus more on themes of freedom and fun things that young generations are drawn to.

To still incorporate Mario into my video I have placed stencils of My SupervicBro characters throughout the frames in my video to incorporate a sense that he is with you every step of the way should you need him.

Although I was very interested in using the song Midnight Life a remix by M83 there were issues with copyrighted material so I opted to using a basic alternative instrumental.

I have used iMovie to create my video and placed a filter called hard colour over my filming to enhance colour and reconnect it with the brightness that is used in my application.

These are photos of the costume that I was initially going to use and also of some of the shots in my video.

Interaction Video

For my Super Vic Bros video I am wanting to create mario into a real life character going through the same experiences as a first year student would to make the user feel more comfortable. I am going to use this film mainly as a promotion for my App.

I am going to have someone dressed in a full mario costume that will walk around familiar wellington spots such as oriental parade and cuba street interacting with the public as he/she travels. I would like to present the video as more of a fly on the wall/day in the life approach and am particularly interested in grey scaling.

I am very interested in using the track Midnight Life for my backing audio as i feel it interacts well with a younger audience without being overly invasive

This is the costume that I have sourced for the film. Although I would have preferred to have a full bobble head costume in regards to time I will have to resort to this.
I pick up the costume tomorrow and will begin filming! I will post pictures of my initial film frames

Design Brief

INTRODUCTION TO INTERACTION DESIGN- PROJECT TWO

For my application assignment I decided to associate with a simple artist model – Super Mario brothers. In the world of retro gaming Mario is considered a classic so I wanted to capture a simplistic yet effect style adapting the crucial elements that make Mario what it is.

I adapted the use of Victoria University into the name Super Vic Bros to suggest an game like experience. Pixelated imagery has been used along with the character Mario himself to create an interactive experience for users. My application is directed towards first year Victoria University students who may need extra assistance with finding their bearings from class to class. To avoid confusion I have covered the most essential areas that a first year student would need to find such as the library.

I have designed the application as an effective method for students to either test their navigation skills or receive help with directions by having a series of options. ‘Show me’ allows students to be shown the most direct path to ones class, while ‘test me’ challenges students to find their own routs to gain points that can then be redeemed at the canteen as coffee vouchers.

Welcome to Hunter

As Mario is commonly known for its retro use of sound I am planning to use the original Mario theme song to accompany my application. I feel it will add to the authenticity of the application. Further in my design I have developed my closing page complete with a back button allowing users to return to the original home page.

For my App I am largely using the use of flash buttons and also motion tweens to move my Mario character. As higher levels are unlocked that is when the second Mario brother will come into use within the App. Points can be earned through the 'Test me' option found on the menu bar. The more points that are awarded the closer the user comes to gaining points the they can redeem for coffee vouchers at the canteen or drink vouchers at the hunter lounge.

Prototypes/General Design

These are examples of prototypes for my opening tool bars and also my first stage of the application game. The idea is that Mario will be guided to one end of the maze to another.

The type face I am going to use for my Application is called Covert Ops font as I feel that it incorporates well with the development of the Mario theme. It was sources from DaFont.com

I Will be using a standard Nintendo style controller for movement of the characters.  This is a genral design of the one that I will be using. It will be placed at the bottom right hand of the screen and will allow the user to move Mario around the maze

I have encorperated my Super Vic logo onto a prototype of the Iphone 3

Super Vic Bros

I have decided to base my App on the well known retro game Super Mario Bros however I will specify the application to Victoria University. I am wishing to create an interactive game style application best suited to the teenage generation. My App is ultimately designed for first year students who are unfamiliar with the Vic uni campus and will act as a digital support for students to require assistance when trying to find there bearings. The app will consist of three options the first being the 'Show Me' setting where students are guided to a direct route to their classes. The second is a 'Test me' setting for students who wish to continually familiarise themselves with the campus. It will create challenges along the way and you will win extra point for discovering short cuts from class to class.

New Features

An idea I thought would be successful to including in my application would to incorporate the amounts of people traffic up at Kelburn campus or at least for those who had the same application much similar to that just introduced by Google Maps. Google Maps recently introduced traffic updates as one of the mapping services so adapting that to amounts of people would be an interesting sidelining aspect to my own application. They have also included weather updates which would be an interesting aspect to further explore also.

Kelburn Campus - Surrounding Area

For this assignment I would like to explore the different variations that have already been explored in application mapping. Examples such as google maps are a good basing point to structure what i wish my application to achieve. As Kelburn university campus is a large scale area i will be focusing mostly on room to room mapping rather than building to building  mapping to ensure my map is simplistic yet effective

DSDN112 Completed putty

This is the putty that I intend to use for my assignment. There are 4 colours and all are of the same exact texture and amount.

- I will be exploring further with the containers as my experiment requires a blindfold test i wish to create something that is more appropriately accessed by someone who is unable to see.

DSDN101- Storyboard

DSDN101- Culture and Context personal brainstorm

DSDN101- Culture and Context Group Brainstorm

Standpoint- Culture & Context

Culture and context refers widely to all processes influencing human lifestyle in general. In my stop motion film I am intending to explore the ideals behind culture and context but specifically the idea of development and adaptation of culture. Through my brainstorm I have expressed the aspects that I have found abruptly important in relation to culture and context and have used these as a backboard to develop what I feel best portrays culture and social influences.  I have decided to show “A new way of seeing” in abstract form by showing the paths of personal identity through people who influence culture.  Without identity we would all be duplicates of one another, causing no new ideas and for world to never move forward.  My stop motion will begin with a person wearing a paper bag with cut out eyeholes; I have used this concept as my starting point I wish to communicate the idea of how we as humans all start as a blank canvas and as we travel through life we define our individual personalities from what we experience. Once the bag is ripped off I will then continue to stop motion quotes of famous people that have gone before such as gandhi showing change of  situation. I will reflect the mood through lighting the colour use of the paint for example black expressing dark periods of time. I will incorporate my quote “A new way of seeing “on the hand of my model to connect it with the idea that we as humans are a new way of seeing ourselves.  I chose this as my stop motion influence as it can be bridged both to the development of personal identity and also the development of cultural identity through the ages. Instead of the paint referring to personal crisis it can reflect social negativities or progress of humanity. As part of my research I have explored people that have had considerable influence on human culture itself such as Mahatma Gandhi, and as a result found my concept for my stop motion film.

171 - Historical Wellington Building

The old bank arcade situated on Lambton Quay is one of Wellington’s most treasured architectural sights. The land it is placed on was once the sight of Plimmer's Ark former Wellington government. The arcade was designed buy Thomas Turnbull and “A contract was let to T. Carmichael on 4 April 1899” building practices where then put in motion. The premises undertook a vigorous design process with many of Turnbull’s designs being deemed “too lavish”(Kernohan) as there was a push towards a more modest aesthetic. The arcade first opened on July 1st 1901 and was used as the Bank of New Zealand’s head quarters. The Bank Arcade is an “imposing structure” and follows the combining styles of Edwardian Baroque and Late Neo-Classicism with individual aspects present on each of the three levels. Level one portrays a heavy rustic appeal with two floors overhead connected by visually appealing Corinthian columns also seen in neo-classical architecture such as the Parthenon. The second floor also has columned windows with decorative corbels from classic medieval architecture, emphasizing organic ornamentation. The Arcade has been described as "A handsome, lofty room, said to be one of the largest of its kind in the colonies" (Historic Org) Much like the ideals of neoclassicism The Bank Arcade was erected to represent and benefit the corporate image of New Zealand’s largest banking organization and to enforce the ideals of superiority. “This building has very great architectural and aesthetic value. It is a fine Edwardian commercial building designed by one of Wellington's most important architectural practices”.(Wellington City Council). The prominent wedge shaped sight is pivotal to Wellington City Business District and to many is an iconic piece of historical architecture.

Group Animation Project

Conflict Records clashes the formal elegance of classical music and the distorted chaos of dubstep to create a new genre of music aimed at 17 to 28 year olds. Through our advertisement we are showing a literal conflict of the ornament smashing against the graffitied wall to establish contrast between the two diverse music genres we combine. The music we have chosen is “River flows in you Dubstep Remix” by “Yiruma” because it best represents the essence of music Conflict Records would produce. Instead of representing our slogan “Hold onto your snapback”in a strict literal form, we have referenced it in a more abstract way, this allows our advertisement to subconsciously bridge the gap between our two advertising medias.

DSDN171 - Blog 4 Hand in

Autour De

The world is full of twisted paths and undiscovered corners, why is it our heads tell us to go straight why not take the curved road? Hannah Pearce explores sculpture in a way that captures the essence of diversity, the avid contrast between line and curvature in true organic forms seen in the Rococo and Baroque periods. “The decorative details here, as in most rococo furniture, derive from real, or at least possible, organic natural forms” (Du Pont, 1980). Exhibition Autour de meaning around was inspired by the ideals of Ross Lovegrove and Rococo, throwing symmetry to the wind and investigating all that moves unchallenged.

Fluidity and hypnosis are the Bonnie and Clyde of Autour De. Pearce delves into the simplistic structure of the spiral engaging the mind and heightening the imagination, taking the eye on a contoured adventure. The Structural Influence by French Rococo in Pearce’s work represent all that is beauty while the use of organic materials such as corrugated card and wood draws back to natural significance. Rococo manner is characterized by graceful, enchanting, lighthearted themes of flirting and unrequited, melancholic love among the aristocracy.” (Mulch, 2011) It is the relationship projecting contrast that opens the doors for ones individual emotional interpretation.

Whether a curve is two-dimensional or three-dimensional it automatically shares the personality that a straight line will never have. It may have imperfections but it took the time to stop and smell the roses. Pearce’s sculpture shows a deep understanding of direction and change portrayed by the various forms it encompasses, dependent on how the piece is positioned and opposing shadow lines. The eye is encouraged to move in a circular motion following the movement of the piece, discovering that in fact what goes around does come
around.

DSDN 171 - Blog 3 Assignment Hand in

DSDN171 – Blog Assignment 3

Antiques Hunter

(Trufast, 2012)

This dressing table found on trade me is an avid example of decorative resurrected rococo décor. This is because Rococo was inclined to make objects of beauty rather than functionality, a rebellion against neoclassicism.

The elegant organic filigree that is placed on both the upper mirror, lower mirror and parallel draws reflects the ornate style that was adopted during the rococo period. The detailing shows leafy and flame like textures, which were a renowned part of the Rococo style “Undoubtedly the most beautiful and voluptuous of all leaf work are the embossed sheet metal acanthus leaves of the Baroque and Rococo period” (Close, 2003). It shows the reliance the Rococo movement placed on the artistic eye and nature as an artist model. As stated by Henry Frances Du Pont author of scholar journal ‘Winther Portfolio’ “The decorative details here, as in most rococo furniture, derive from real, or at least possible, organic natural forms” (Du Pont, 1980).

The Rococo movement emphasized natural ornamentation in every aspect, which can be seen in the craftsmanship of this object. The color of this dressing table is also in line with Rococo style as it is of a neutral organic tone as the movement objectively used creamy pastel colours and gold’s as opposed to bright invasive ones. The structure of this furniture piece shows the asymmetrical decorative columns that were initially adapted from neo classicism. The traditional feminine curved lines specific to the Rococo style are apparent in the frame works of both the dresser and the stool placed in front of it. The structure is poised on curved frames which are described as “animal legs” by Paul Godwill, Online art history analyst “The intricacy of the curved designs of the animal-form legs denotes their expertise in the rococo design.” (Goodwill, 2008) The curved legs also co-inside with the femininity of Rococo design. As Rococo design was seen to be fashionable it was sought after by the wealthy “would cost a handsome sum. Rococo appealed to the upper class as far away as Russia” states arthistory.net. Now on trade me this replica piece is up for $1,999 (Tradme, 2012) New Zealand dollars.

DSDN171 Blog Assignment 2 - Hand In

For this assignment I have researched various resources that give information on the Rococo movement.

Works Cited

Website

ArtHistory.Net. (2009). Retrieved from ArtHistory.Net: http://www.arthistory.net/sitemap.html

This website contains information at an introductory level for people wanting to gain knowledge about the history of the Rococo movement. It describes how the movement began and the various areas of Europe that were influenced by Rococo. It also is informative on how the movement was captured through objects.

Photo

Coulson, C. (Photographer). (1996). Rococo-style chapel. [Print Photo]. Retrieved from http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/countries/germany-photos/

This photo gives insight to the elaborate styling that was essential to the Rococo movement. The source shows the significance of colour and ornamentation in the Rococo period.

Book

Blunt, A. (1975). Neopolitan, Baroque and Rococo Architecture. London: A. Zwemmer.

Touches on the transformation from the Italian Baroque to Rococo architecture styles. This would be a useful source as it has more extensive information in terms of building architecture and the contrast between the two movements.

Journal

Lockwood, B., Owens, R., Severyn, G. Modernism and the Rise of Post-Modernism. William and Mary Bill of Rights Journal, 2 (1), 175-177.

This source would be useful as it explains the rebellion of the Rococo movement against Baroque style. It also elaborates how Rococo made people revaluate the simplistic way that the world was viewed at that time.

Edited Book

Bassagli, M., & Reiche, M. (2009) Leading Figures. G. Fossi (Ed). Baroque & Rococo (6-184) New York, America: Sterling Publishing.

This text would be useful as it highlights many of the essential contributors within the Rococo movement and also supplies visual examples of both craftwork and paintings influenced by the Rococo movement.
